Travis Scott will ultimately not be prosecuted for the mob that killed ten people during the Astroworld festival he co-organized in Texas in November 2021, prosecutors announced on Thursday, June 29.
“There will be no criminal charges”Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg’s office said in a statement. “It is tragic that ten innocent people were killed trying to enjoy an evening of music and entertainment”the prosecutor said. “But a tragedy is not always a crime and a death is not always a murder”has continued.
On Nov. 5, 2021, an estimated 50,000 spectators had gathered at NRG Park, in Houston, to watch American rapper Travis Scott’s concert when a stampede trapped scores of people. Lacking air and space, some had passed out and been trampled by the crowd.
Possible civil lawsuits
Faced with requests for help, the organizers had waited several tens of minutes before stopping the music and evacuating the premises. A nine-year-old boy died in the stampede, which also left hundreds injured.
Numerous complaints had been filed against the organizers of the Astroworld festival, accused of failing to guarantee the safety of the participants. Thursday’s ruling only affects prosecution, so civil suits are still possible.
